are going to be traveling over the new span of the bay bridge and joining each other with governor brown as we celebrate in september with largest construction project in the history of the bay area and we talked about it last year when we were thinking about how to celebrate this bridge crossing and we made some cultural connections. and something about our ancestors helping to build the railroads here in the 1800 and is now two chinese americas mayors of our country coming together on the bay privilege. just something remarkable about that. you know, a year ago, i appeared before you, to talk about what we were planning to do, it was the year of the dragon, the dragon meant that we had to be bold, take risks and that all of the elements around the dragon tell us, us forward to take the biggest risks we could for the good of our residents and i'm happy to say that now, that we have with about to celebrate the year of the serpent or snake it's considered in our culture the minute aye dragon which means not so bold not too risky, in fact kind-of what you would think a snake would do still

i see it all over the city that a tag is painted over with brown paint, with whatever is available. and then it becomes a real problem because it's really hard to remove it then. so, i think that -- my thought about it, i know dpw doesn't have the financial resources, but realistically i think sidewalks even though they're kind of that nebulous gray area where technically they're owned by the property owner, but they really are public property. and i think that's something that dpw should somehow find the funding to take care of that property because private property owners are not going to hire somebody with a power washer to come out there and do it. i just know it. i mean, i see very, very few examples of that. >> larry. >> i would agree. but as always, it's an issue of funding. we do have approved product listses on our website. so, if you run into somebody, there are some there they can use and actually work relatively well. but the ultimately cities face this all the time. you have to make decisions about what resources you have and what you can and can't do with the resources

she was good friends with joan brown and jay de feo. shes what an integral part of the art scene in north beach. she was also part of the first argot lin artist's in residence program in 1967 and spent the better part of the '70s deeply devote today community arts and activism. she was part of the founding member of scrap, and she was involved with the neighborhood arts program during its insanction. -- inception. she went on to found the san francisco cultural arts center and she is the first director. i am excited to share with you i'm working with the asian american women artists association and film maker madelein limb to bring you the world of bernice bing, a documentary we're working on now about her life and work and it's going to premiere in june of 2013. thank you so much for this honor. it's long overdue.
